RUSHNYK PROJECTS WORLDWIDE

Victory Stitches

21 Ukrainian women aged 9–66 embroidered a nearly 4 m protective rushnyk with a diamond-pattern flag, presented on Independence Day (24 Aug).

What the sources say

In Münster, Germany, Halyna Kalyniuk initiated the "Victory Stitches" project for the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. She relocated from Lviv to Germany in April 2022. Initially, seven women started the embroidery, and the group eventually grew to 21 Ukrainian women aged 9 to 66.

The group embroidered a protective rushnyk measuring nearly four meters in length. The textile depicts the Ukrainian flag composed of diamond shapes, with each diamond containing a unique cross-stitch pattern. Participants incorporated their prayers for peace and victory into the embroidery process.

Organizers presented and measured the rushnyk on August 24. They applied to the Book of World Records to register the piece as a German record for the largest cross-stitched Ukrainian rushnyk made by displaced Ukrainian women. Kalyniuk also plans to publish a booklet documenting the participants' stories.
