What the sources say
Organized by Solomiia Lukovetska and Iryna Taranova of the NGO Жінки роду, the "Rushnyk of Hope" project began in July 2025 in Kyiv. Families of prisoners of war and missing soldiers gathered weekly across 46 centers in Ukraine, the USA, Canada, and Germany to embroider traditional cloths. Participants used the process to find mental support and build community.
The initial project lasted two and a half months. While based on Sokal embroidery, participants added local ornaments, military symbols, and the names of their relatives. Diaspora communities created five large works by sewing together individually embroidered sections. In March 2026, the ZAG gallery in Lviv exhibited 44 of these finished cloths.
