RUSHNYK PROJECTS WORLDWIDE

Rushnyk of National Unity

9 m cloth embroidered by about 1,500 people in 48 sessions in 2007–08, six of them in diaspora communities (Poland, USA, Canada, Moldova); presented at Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in 2019 before a tour of the regions.

What the sources say

The 9-meter Rushnyk of National Unity was embroidered by about 1,500 people over 48 collective sessions in 2007 and 2008. Participants ranged from an 8-year-old girl to an 84-year-old woman. Work began on Khortytsia island and included six sessions with diasporas in Poland, the United States, Canada, and Moldova. Several Ukrainian churches and the Spiritual Administration of Crimean Muslims blessed the initiative.

The design features three sections representing the past, present, and future of Ukraine. The past section includes Trypillian signs, Kyivan Rus symbols, and Cossack baroque elements, featuring Berehyni figures holding a gold-embroidered Tryzub. The present is depicted as a Tree of Life with 27 flowers symbolizing Ukraine's administrative divisions. The future is represented by stars and the national coat of arms.

On January 21, 2019, the Ministry of Culture presented the completed cloth at the bell tower of the Dormition Cathedral in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The event commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Day of Unity of Ukraine and featured a joint prayer. Following this presentation, the rushnyk was scheduled to travel to every region of Ukraine.
