«Vyshyvanka in Ukraine: A Socio-Cultural Tradition» — UNESCO nomination
Dossier submitted in May 2026 for the Representative List; under review, not inscribed.
What the sources say
In May 2026, Ukraine's Ministry of Culture, Foreign Ministry, and Permanent Mission to UNESCO submitted the dossier "Vyshyvanka in Ukraine: A Socio-Cultural Tradition" to UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee. Deputy Prime Minister and Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna signed the nomination, seeking the embroidered shirt's inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The dossier was prepared cooperatively by government institutions, researchers, artists, businesses, and the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine. The nomination documents the tradition of the vyshyvanka, which features distinct embroidery techniques, colors, and ornament styles developed across different regions of Ukraine and passed down through generations.
The submission coincided with World Vyshyvanka Day, celebrated annually on the third Thursday of May. The observance originated in 2006 when Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University student Lesia Voroniuk suggested wearing the embroidered shirts to class. The day is now marked in over 100 countries worldwide. The UNESCO application remains under review.
