Vyshyvanka: Embroidered Activism (Europa Nostra Heritage Hub)
Panel on embroidery as heritage and resistance (5 Dec 2023); notes World Vyshyvanka Day received a 2022 European Heritage Award.
What the sources say
On December 5, 2023, the Europa Nostra Heritage Hub in Kraków hosted an event centered on traditional Ukrainian embroidery. The gathering featured Dr. Lesia Voroniuk, creator of World Vyshyvanka Day, who spoke about embroidery as a talisman and weapon during the war. She noted that new wartime patterns now include tanks, drones, and bombs alongside traditional geometric and floral designs.
The event continued with a panel discussion involving anthropologist Dr. Ewa Klekot and art methodologist Dr. Monika Nęcka, moderated by Dr. Katarzyna Jagodzińska. They examined embroidery within broader anthropological, social, and artistic contexts. The discussion took place both in person at the hub's Kraków premises and via a live YouTube stream.
This Kraków meeting also marked the publication of a bilingual ethnographic photo album titled “Imperishable. Ukrainian state symbols in the folk embroidery and weaving.” During the event, participants announced the upcoming opening of the Museum of Ukrainian Embroidered Shirts in Chernivtsi, an institution co-created by Voroniuk.
